Nostalgic Scripts : Rayo Beats Sampled Yvonne Chaka Chaka in Paunochema by Stiiv
One of my favourite records from Stiiv (Steven Mugarisi) is Paunochema. There is not a week that elapses without me putting it on repeat so I guess it fulfils my “'replay value’’ criterion in many years.
Perhaps the hook is nostalgic because in my early days as a young cadre, I was fascinated that a South African iconic woman, Yvonne Chaka Chak did a hook in Shona. On top of that having top producer like Rayo Beats to chop it up.
That’s a gif from God Almighty.
Or well perhaps I should admit that Stiiv broght his pen game to the fore front and I feel like I am experiencing an audio movie.
The first lines, ‘‘ I left a cup iri pa tale inemunhuwo wedoro nezuro, Mhamha ndokuziva kuti vayarutsa and havana kufara nazvo’’
See before we go any further, let’s applaud him for diving right into it. For those who are not as privileged as myself to nderstand Shona, what he just said there is, “I left a cut wreaking of alcohol on the table yesterday, My mum discovered that I’ve become a man but was unhappy with it’’
Doesn’t quite rhyme in Eglish but that’s why you should learn Shona (it’s not difficult trust me). - You may be missing out on some good African Hip-hop.
I digress…
The rest of the song is not neccessarly a coherent story from A to B but rather diary entries of a life lived by what we call a “ghetto youth” in Zimbabwe.
I don’t know who appointed Stiiv, spokes person of the youth but he certainly has been the best man for the jo in the past 5 years and running.
With music posts I learned that I don’t need to talk too much when you can listen for yourself.
